Frequently asked questions
Everything teachers ask before joining the beta. Still curious? Email us any time.
What is Mastery Monitor?
Mastery Monitor is a standards-based mastery tracker for K–12 teachers. It reads your gradebook and shows which students have mastered which standards, using a configurable streak-based rule — so you can run standards-based grading without maintaining a spreadsheet.
Is my student data safe? What about FERPA?
Mastery Monitor runs on your own Windows computer. Student data never leaves your device — there is no cloud sync, no account, and no student data is uploaded anywhere. The app connects to the internet only to check for updates and verify your license — never to send student data. It is designed to support FERPA-conscious workflows because student data stays on the teacher's device. Meeting FERPA obligations remains the responsibility of you and your school or district.
Does the app connect to the internet?
Only to check for updates and verify your license. Your student data is never transmitted — it stays on your computer, and the app is fully usable offline for day-to-day work. If something breaks, the app keeps a local crash log; it is never sent automatically — you can choose to send it for troubleshooting, and you should review it first, as it is not intended to contain student information.
What can I import scores from?
You can import from Canvas LMS™ and Google Classroom™ gradebook export files, as well as any Excel or CSV file. You can also import a Skyward® roster PDF to pull in student names and support flags.
How does the streak-based mastery rule work?
You decide what proficiency means — for example, "three scores of 3 or higher in a row." Mastery Monitor applies that rule to every student and standard automatically, including an optional forgiveness buffer so a single off day does not erase weeks of evidence.
What does it cost?
Mastery Monitor is currently in beta and free for beta testers. At launch it will be available as an annual license (billed yearly, per teacher) on Teachers Pay Teachers and directly on this site. Beta testers get early-supporter pricing.
How do I join the beta?
Add your email on the Join the Beta page. We will email you a download link when the next Windows build is ready. It is free during the beta period.
Does it work on Mac or Chromebook?
Not yet. Mastery Monitor is currently a Windows 10/11 application. Other platforms may be considered based on demand from teachers.
Which subjects and standards are supported?
Science support is designed for teacher-selected Next Generation Science Standards* performance expectations. Math and ELA support can use Common Core State Standards references, and other subjects can use custom standards entry.
